I probably should have, but I just couldn't. I simply could not. Not in good conscience. It was so innocent and so forlorn. And sopping wet. And sunk in mud.
I could not leave the poor thing sitting on the side of the road. So, I pulled my van over on a busy route with hazards on, shoved it through the muck to the curb, tipped it on its side, leaned it upside down against the bumper and hoisted it up into my trunk. Off came the free sign as I slid it into its space. The warpy, soggy, circa 40's waterfall dresser is now snug and dehydrating in my basement. Aaahh, so happy. I swear it smiled at me. Or maybe I just smiled enough for the both of us. Even though the paint I used is called Kings Canyon, this desk is perfect for a queen. Doesn't this desk just make you want to sit and write out bills? Or actually jump into homework? I knew the two-toned effect would show off the curves of this fine piece, but I was so crazy about the hardware that I had to highlight that as well. I used a gray chalk paint on the stately frame and a soft beige on the serpentine style drawers. The lattice wing hardware was done in a delicate aqua. The drawers and pulls are dark waxed for a cast of rustic character and the whole desk is lightly distressed. This set would also be a lovely vanity for a lovely lady. The mahogany chair I reupholstered in coordinating material blends the set together. These two pieces were not a set originally. I purchased them separately and then introduced them to one another. They became best friends and wanted to match outfits. All three tones and shades on both pieces hold hands and play nicely together. I had to set up indoors because I had no one to help me carry it outside and rain is in the forecast for the next several days. I didn't want to make you wait that long. Therefore, please pardon the photo-bombers in my entryway. But by the way..., isn't this a great spot for the desk?! If I can, I will stage it outside for better lighting and privacy. If not, these actually came out pretty true to life other than being a tad shadowed in some shots. Available to grace your home. Before:
The leaves right now, as shown in the orchard photos a few posts back, are so vibrant and rich that I said I would love to paint some pieces the same tones.
Well, I found a sunny yellow, apple red, forest green and pale tan. I can use each alone or combine them for some amazing autumn colors. I also got a small size of an odd dark gold kind of color. It looks a bit like butternut squash or something else that is a brownish-gold. I joked with the sales guy that it looked like something a baby may leave in a diaper. He hesitantly agreed not wanting to a) hurt my feelings or b) convince me to ditch the paint. However, he could not hide his expression from me. Yet, I was weirdly drawn to it and kept envisioning it used somewhere. Then I would shake my head and set it down. Then pick it back up because there was just something about it. The longer we stood there staring at it, we both agreed it has its place on the chart of beautiful autumn tones. I may try a frame in it or side table to ease it into my palette. But I really like it, so you never know-you just may see a full out dresser or, even better, a big old armoire strutting it. I din't put a picture of that up because it'll be a lovely surprise. Fun ahead... |
