I went to my friendly lumber yard again, Howe's, for some wood cutting, and I noticed that a couple of hand constructed benches I had seen the week before were gone. My heart flopped down as I scolded myself for being too wimpy and not asking about them the week before when I spied them kicked to a corner upside down. My sensors were reeling that these must be on their way out, but I was too chicken to ask. So as my guy measured and set up for the cuts, I mustered a smidgen of courage and asked all cool and casually while glancing around the floor, "So ahhh what happened to those old benches that were here before?" Cringe. He swung his head around toward outside the warehouse door and with a slight scrunch, he said, "Those ones over there?" I couldn't scan the doorway fast enough. When I caught sight of them, I was leaping and cartwheeling as I stood still and poised. "Oh, yeah, those. If you guys don't want them anymore, I'd like to buy them off of you." I'm so smooth. He looked back down at his work and said, "Uh, no, you can just pull your car up and throw them in it." Wow. Freebies. I wanted to sprint out of there and peel up to that doorway before anyone else could come grab them or take them away. But I had to be professional. I danced inside until the cut was done, and as he slid it off the table I grabbed it, smiled big and said, "Thank you so much, I'll just bring my car around now." As he confirmed with a "Sure," he was speaking to my back already halfway across the scaffolds of wood stock. These sturdy benches will be perfect for working on my projects. I can't wait to paint them then distress it all off again! Or maybe leave them just the way they are, hmmmm......
